Owner review: Rolex Explorer 214270

Rolex Explorer 214270

If I tried to distil the whole Rolex line into a single watch, it would be the Rolex Explorer, or more specifically, the Rolex Explorer 214270 in this review.

We have a straightforward design that demonstrates inherent beauty in a product of astute conception. In simpler terms, charm is when form follows function. High contrast between fully-lumed white gold markers and a matt black dial is hard to beat in terms of legibility. Framed by an unadorned bezel, the dial is deliberate yet casual, thanks to enlarged dimensions. Three Mercedes hands divide a slightly busy but well-balanced dial in typical Rolex fashion. As with any classic Rolex, the tried-and-true Oyster case provides extra peace of mind under almost any survivable situation.

The Rolex Explorer 214270 is a rare modern breed that retains the curvaceous case construction of vintage models. Say what you will about poor creativity and artificial scarcity. A Rolex is a Rolex precisely because of a time-honoured design that they perfected at the very beginning. Rolex focuses on providing a well-made product to fill a specific market need. A good product doesn’t need replacing every few months.  It is the antithesis of planned obsolescence and consumerism. A Rolex is literally for life if chosen wisely.

Like many have said, the Rolex Explorer 214270 is plain but pragmatic, eclectic yet emblematic – just as Hans Wilsdorf intended. I won’t pretend to describe what is not there, but the Explorer is an unobtrusive watch that will run as long as it is on your wrist. You put it on, it tells the time, and you don’t worry about it. Those who accuse the Explorer of dullness are barking up the wrong tree. This watch is not there to look pretty and capture your gaze. It is there to tell you the time, no matter what you throw at it. The Explorer only seems vanilla at first because a true character demands time to mature, which makes both the watch and its owner.

Depending on one’s angle and perspective, Rolex can be many things. However, most will agree that the Explorer pushes aside superfluous stereotypes to leave an efficient design that performs its intended function remarkably well.
