Owner Review: Casio F-100 “Ellen Ripley’s watch from Alien”

Casio F-100

I present to you the Casio F-100, a watch which was released to the market in 1977 at a now bargain price of $39.95.

Over its 43 years of existence, this watch has not gone unnoticed by Casio Watch enthusiasts nor by watchmaking professionals worldwide and as we will see later neither by the science fiction movie lovers.

The question is: why is it so popular? Basically due to 2 main reasons. Firstly because it was the first watch produced by Casio entirely made of resin (including its case back) although curiously the inside of the case is steel coated. The arrival of the resin made digital watches  a lot lighter on the wrist and offered a black external appearance without any danger of deterioration. Thanks to these benefits, black plastic watches invaded the market and became the most supplied watch within the watchmaking sector. This allowed them to reach a wide variety of users that still enjoy them until today.

Secondly, another reason why this watch became so popular is that it was the watch that Officer Ellen Ripley (played by the actress Sigourney Weaver) wore in the famous 1979 Ridley Scott movie Alien. It was precisely in that year, 1979 when the Casio F-100 stopped being produced. Therefore, as you can expect, it has become a highly sought after object by Casio watch fans as well as science fiction lovers.

Like its steel-made counterpart (Casio 52QS-14), this watch uses the module 52 and its case features 4 front buttons whose functions (setting, light, calendar, 1/100 chronograph) are colour coded. Like any other watch made of resin, the Casio F-100 is very comfortable on the wrist due to the lightness of its materials and it has continued to attract attention over the years due to its futuristic design.
