I should preface this particular watch review with one very important admission: despite being an avid watch collector for a number of years with a fair number of pieces occupying my safe both past and present, I have never owned an Omega before. I don’t mean an Omega Speedmaster, I mean that I have never owned one single Omega before. That I chose the Speedy Tuesday Omega Speedmaster Ultraman to be first was the culmination of a long pursuit for this watch. Sadly I missed out when the original and first limited edition Speedy Tuesday release of 2012 pieces sold out in less than two hours back in September 2018. Thankfully there was another Speedy Tuesday on the way from the boys in Biel.
Whether one is drawn to this watch through an affinity to the classic 1960’s Japanese TV series of the same name or because of the incredibly playful, orange style which seems so sought after in the current market there can be no doubting that this Speedmaster has something for everyone. From the moment one unboxes the incredible themed packaging (which contains a surprise or two along the way) to the excitement of using the Beta Capsule tool for the first time to swap from the deliciously sporty NATO strap to the more refined leather (all included as part of the package), this is a watch that – as limited or unlimited as it may be – simply oozes originality.
The Omega Speedmaster Ultraman Speedy Tuesday wears smaller as a 42mm watch than, say, a Tudor of the same size and when one marries that comfort with the functionality and quality of the Omega speedmaster chronograph with – let’s face it – the utter coolness of this Ultraman, it is hard not to smile when this Swiss timepiece slips on to the wrist.
