I have always loved watches but only in the last few years have I become very serious about the hobby. As my interest grew, so too did my collection, as at its height, I had a grouping of 15 watches. Today, I only have three, with one being mechanical and worn regularly. That piece is an Omega Constellation Globemaster.
The Globemaster does all the things that I need and want from a watch. The sizing is perfect for my 6.5 inch wrist at a 39mm diameter with a lug to lug length of 46mm. It is a virtual chameleon in that it functions well as a dress watch, as people usually see it as one. However, on its steel bracelet, it feels very sporty. It looks and feels just as home on a gray nato, one of which it has lived on for much of the summer. It’s also an under the radar rugged watch with its 100m water resistance and a tungsten bezel that is massively scratch resistant. Not to mention it has a beautifully decorated co-axial movement and awesome observatory medallion on the case back. This is a true all-rounder that excels at almost all things. The only drawbacks worth considering are the absence of a screw-down crown and there are some rather sharp edge finishes on the bracelet.
To address an issue some have with this watch, I do not think Omega is simply copying a Rolex bezel. Omega does have precedence using textured bezels in earlier designs. Also, the use of tungsten is original as well as the design of the bezel, which is more coin edge than fluted. And it is lovely. I often catch myself watching it as it plays with light.
The Omega Constellation Globemaster is a well-executed and designed watch. It really shows in its finishing, unique movement, and dial details. But I also appreciate how understated it is. It doesn’t draw attention to itself or feel ostentatious. I never feel it is out of place on my wrist regardless of the scenario.
