Way back in 1976 Citizen invented the first light-powered analogue quartz watch that runs only on light as a power source. Amazingly it can retain power for up to 6 months on a full charge. This history brings us to my Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Diver.
The dial is matt black with Trapezoid markers at 12,3,6 and 9. Lume pips indicate the hours with a blue lume which is very bright. At 4 o’clock sits a small date window. Arrow hands are broad and the minute hand is orange giving a contrast to the matt black. There’s little writing on the dial which is nice to see.
The case is Stainless Steel with brushed finishing. A polished screw-down crown sits at the 4 o’clock position and is easy to grip and pull out for time and date adjustments. The uni-directional bezel has a very satisfying click and adjustment, with a 12 o’clock triangle and lume pip. On the back, we have a lightly laser etched screw-down case back.
On the wrist it is very comfortable even at 44 mm it wears more like a 42mm. Especially on the 20mm rubber strap. Once set the watch remains accurate as with most quartz. Unlike most quartz, you won’t be needing to change a battery every 12 months or so. At 10mm thick it is versatile under any cuff. The mineral crystal is AR coated. Overall the watch competes very well with the likes of Seiko and Orient and at its pricepoint outperforms many much higher priced watches with its ISO-Certification. If you are in the market for something with reliability and endurance then the Citizen Promaster is the way to go in my opinion.
