So the Q Timex (or Timex Q) has been a hot topic in watch circles for the past few months, but is it a case of hype and clever marketing over solid watch substance!
Well as with most things that we purchase that may not be classed as essential everyday items ( watches for most people now fall into this category) . There is a large element of emotion that goes into making that purchase.
The Q Timex I feel capitalises on a current market segment that wants or maybe loves a retro inspired piece but doesn’t necessarily want to spend thousands to get that look on wrist.
So what exactly is it? Well Timex released the original Q back in the 70s and this recent release is a reissue for all intents and purposes of that faithful watch. The quartz movement, the plexiglass crystal and the Pepsi bezel insert. Water resistance is a mere 50 meters and the case is a comparably small 38mm by today’s standards.
When you read the specification on a piece like this it’s hard to really even think of it as a tool watch in any true sense of the word. No screw down crown, no oyster style bracelet and no submarine crushing depth rating!
You would be forgiven for thinking, well what’s the point?
Well as with many watches sometimes the piece is more than merely a spec sheet or sum of its parts.
Slide the woven stainless steel bracelet on your wrist and for most people looking down at this Q on wrist will produce a smile and satisfaction only far more expensive pieces could elicit normally.
The Q really does wear well, look lovely with those 70s design styles. For most people this piece will be something they enjoy wearing and it does everything they need.
Current demand is high which I think proves this point.
Some watches speak to the heart and some to the head, for me I think Timex did a great job with the Q of hitting both at this price point.
