Owner review: Rolex Submariner Ceramic 114060

Rolex Submariner Ceramic 114060

The supercase, love it or hate it, is a fixture of the Rolex Submariner Ceramic 114060. Despite its chunky lugs there is much to love about this Rolex staple.

I had always lusted after the Submariner for as long as I can remember. I was initially (like many) lukewarm towards the Rolex Submariner 114060 but as time went on I began to understand what rolex was going for.

With each iteration of the Submariner, Rolex aims to make incremental improvements to deliver the most perfect iteration of their iconic dive watch.

However, when the new case design was released many immediately disliked the “fat lugs” of the supercase. The release of the 124060 had many hailing the submariner as a return to form, a form more in line with the 5513 or the previous model 14060(m).

Rolex Submariner 114060

I propose that the supercase was and is the most evolved version of the Submariner that ever was. The watch is practically bullet proof.

The Submariner 124060 did a lot to remedy the complaints about the Rolex Submariner 114060 but holding the two in my hand I still prefer the 40mm case and more importantly the 20mm lug width that tapers so gracefully down the the clasp.

I’ve formed a bond with my Rolex Submariner Ceramic 114060 and it’s become my go to daily watch as well as the watch I travel with the most. The smooth black ceramic timing bezel is useful in so many circumstances, the simple dial layout with Maxi markers (giving a nod to Maxi dial subs of the past) and glide lock clasp make this a perfect watch for me.

Many have said the boldness of the supercase lugs was a mistake but I believe Rolex was aiming to develop the most capable and modern dive watch possible and in that mission I believe they succeeded.

To finally own one of my absolute grail watches is a dream that took a long time. A dream that was made all the more special when my brother and I were both “allowed” to purchase new submariners together from an AD while in Hawaii both celebrating our 5th wedding anniversaries. Right out of the gate this watch was special to me.

I’ve taken my Submariner on many adventures in all types of weather, scuba diving, skiing, mountain climbing, raising an 5 & 6 year old boys (who enjoy spinning my bezel around during story time) and whatever I through about it, the 114060 takes it in its stride.

Am I satisfied with the Rolex Submariner Ceramic 114060 and the price I paid? Short answer is a resounding yes! Retail is the way to go (if you can get it). Although even now with current grey market prices the 114060 tends to be on the lower spectrum of the Rolex price tier and remains excellent value.

If you’re in the market for go anywhere do anything watch from Rolex. I highly recommend the Rolex Submariner 114060 as a top option.

The Submariner can be a one and only Rolex and will serve its owner for many decades to come. Just don’t be one of those guys that sticks it in a box and is focused on the money. The true pleasure I’ve derived from owning my 114060 has been sharing the watch in my adventures, big or small.
