Owner Review: Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e

Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e

I bought the Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e on a whim! I thought, ‘I wonder if it’s a good Seiko SKX alternative?’ I’m going to say that this watch was extremely low priced, due to being refurbished, however I came to find out that, it was sold as refurbished but it wasn’t. It has a dial error, missing some wording. Citizen just sold them cheap for that sole reason. Quirky value as an investment piece? I don’t buy them for investment reasons though.

This watch is definitely a great (pre-Seiko 5) SKX alternative! One thing that stands out, is the crown position. It’s at the 7 O’clock position, which is great if crowns get in your way, or you are left handed. It also keeps great time, and can be wound, which is one of the SKX owners pet peeves, that it can’t be.

This Citizen Divers watch actually has a great history to it, earlier models were used by Military and Police units, most notably being the Italian Marina Millitare‘s go-to watch! And were actually issued to them. They looked very similar but had Marina Militare on the dial and were good for 500m rather than this ones 200m. I like a bit of history, especially some Military history. It also has a neat ND Limits strap on it.

The bad: Not too much at this price point. The strap is quite tough, and apparently takes a while to break in. The LHD crown is not built for using on this fat boys wrist. It’s a small screw down crown and it’s very hard to wind or correct something ‘on wrist’. Not a big complaint though.

Overall I’m very satisfied with the Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e, and once the World’s chaos has died down, it would be an ideal watch to use for a vacation, especially in places that have a lot of watch robbers….those guys on bikes who jump off and steal your Rolex! They’d jump off and look at your wrist and say, ‘Shit I’ve got one of those’ and ride off into the sunset. I shall say it eloquently ‘It’s a Good un!’
