Owner Review: Casio G-Shock GA-2100 CasiOak

Casio G-Shock GA-2100 CasiOak

Who needs a watch to tell the time? That’s why we have phones. From the dive watch enthusiasts who haven’t touched an ocean in their life to the armchair businessmen wearing their dress watches while eating a burrito – watches are often an extension of your personality more than a tool. That’s where the Casio G-Shock GA-2100 CasiOak comes in.

Dubbed the ‘Casioak’ due to its octagonal similarities to a Royal Oak, it looks like something Batman would have on his wrist. And he wouldn’t be worried about damaging it while fighting crime, as it’s as rugged as any Casio G-Shock in their stable. Rich blacks, lots of dial detail and an ana-digi display make this a joy to look at. But this joy is only achievable in lower light situations to those who have a good level of eyesight, or possibly their own set of night vision goggles like the Dark Knight himself.

The digital display is tiny in comparison to other models by Casio – you are not using this easily to track your run times or check the time in Moscow even if it is capable of both. The lume has also decided to take the stealth option, it’s there on the hands but it’s so faint and discreet it might be unnoticed 5 minutes after the light being switched off. The digi display has a light but this has a time limit so you will find yourself pressing it multiple times in order to read anything useful. But with this said, no one buys the Casioak as a tool.

This timepiece is dedicated to expressing your coolness scale at a level higher than your friends. It is a stealth watch, made to look like you belong in a Bourne movie and you enjoy brooding while sipping neat whisky on the rocks. Casio have hit a home run with this series as they are frequently sold out of all models, from the easier to read 1A1 model to the 80’s pastiche colours of the 7AER, meaning you can find one that suits your personality well. And at retail of between £90-£110 they are incredibly good value for money. Dimensions of 48.5 x 45.4 x 11.8mm mean it is impressive on wrist but has an incredibly slim profile, due to its Carbon Core Guard Structure. This means that it has incredible wrist presence but still feels ridiculously light and easy to wear.

The strap is fit for purpose and it has a quick release, but it isn’t easy to find an alternative aftermarket strap for this model. 4 easy to press buttons are on the sides to access functions and you can even press two together to move the analogue hands away from the digital display of the watch to see it clearly at any time, which never fails to impress anyone who sees it. The only gripe with these is that they kept the buttons silver – this is the only non-stealth aspect of the watch.

So, in closing, it is apparent that this watch is not for those who want to glance at their wrist and see whether it is cocktail hour. This is a statement, a badge, a declaration of your inherent style. This isn’t Adam West’s GMT with a price tag far from your reach, this is Christian Bale’s no nonsense utility belt on your wrist. Be the hero you were meant to be and buy a Casio G-Shock GA-2100 CasiOak, your street cred will thank me later.
