I was introduced to Boldr Supply Co. at Wind Up’s Pop Up Watch Shop in SoHo, NYC last summer. The BOLDR Venture Field Medic Camo-Green is a ruggedly handsome chronograph and field watch combination that immediately caught my attention, simultaneously scratching my field watch and chronograph itches.
While browsing other watches, I pondered if I was caught up in the excitement of socializing with like minded watch collectors after self isolating during the pandemic, or genuinely smitten with the camouflage rendition of the Field Medic because at first glance it is so far removed from what we expect from a field watch, but after closer inspection it is surprisingly derivative in both style and substance.
The BOLDR Venture Field Medic is adorned with detail: unique lugs and chamfered edges blend seamlessly into the case, the caseback is embossed with a limited edition design, and a custom BOLDR insignia is etched into the grippy crown, but it doesn’t end there.
The sea-foam blue, fluorescent green, dingy brown and distressed gray camouflage ensemble brings depth to the dial and spews playful grittiness. The black 24 hour and 60 minute sub-dials ground the camo, and the date wheel features white numerals on a drabby matte green background matching the glistening green splotches.
Unfortunately, the busy dial makes the indices frustratingly illegible in extreme lighting scenarios; whether it is suspiciously dim or blindingly bright. It is a rare inconvenience that I have noticed while wearing this watch on and off for over a year.
The precisely graduated markings count off heart and respiratory rates. The syringe hands are made of the same coated titanium as the watch’s case. Both the hands and markings are glazed in neon dual lume. The markings, hands and pushers combine to simulate a hacking function which has been synonymous with field watches since their inception during the Boer War.
Weighing in at 55 grams, the tough yet feather-weight 38mm titanium case houses a Seiko SII VK64 Meca-Quartz chronograph movement. The case is 12.2mm thick, with 22mm lugs, and measures 40 mm lug to lug. The flat sapphire anti-reflective crystal, screw down crown, and caseback secures the timepiece for 200m (660ft) 20 ATM of water resistance.
The moss green dual plaster nato strap accommodates all wrist sizes, and the titanium hardware matches the watch case but leaves you wanting more. Although appealing, the nylon is rough, scratchy, and its construction obscures the ornate caseback engraving.
However, the BOLDR Venture Field Medic itself is an underrated strap monster. With so much color variation on display there is opportunity to fiddle with matching, or tastefully contrasting strap configurations. I paired my Field Medic with an olive green Nick Mankey Designs Hazard Lines nato hook strap
With an MSRP of $299, the BOLDR Venture Field Medic Green-Camo embodies the spirit of trench watches at a bargain. Thirty dollars of the proceeds are donated to charities dedicated to first responders. I’m thrilled that the Field Medic stood out from the crowded display cases at Wind-Up’s Pop-Up shop last summer. It is a delightful, dependable and durable companion on any wrist.
