Owner Review: Ochs und Junior Annual Calendar 42mm

The Ochs und Junior Annual Calendar is my newest piece in the collection. I have wanted an Ochs und Junior for many years now, having admired them on friends’ wrists and having visited then CEO Beat Weinmann in Lucern 3 years ago. I found this Ochs und Junior Annual Calendar pre-owned. The design on the dial is charming and astronomical with the Sun and Saturn depicted dial side. The genius of Ludwig Oechslin is in my opinion surprisingly unrecognized and this watch as an annual calendar, shows his brilliance.

The titanium 42mm case works well for me with the short lugs and rounded bezel. The dial, hands and color scheme behind for the dots are great for my aesthetic, although I will say that in certain lighting, it is not easy to read. Perhaps a bit more contrast would have been preferable.

I bought the Ochs und Junior Annual Calendar in September, and have enjoyed wearing it immensely and enjoy the practical aspect of the OEM water-resistent Sturgeon strap, although it was quite expensive! The company does make the straps to your wrist size with 5 close holes in the strap. The dial does take a little time to adjust to reading, as it is cleverly designed, but not typical. The date is arranged in a series of 30 dots with one double dot position for 31/1.

The neat concept from Ludwig, is the date is split into 6 sections of 5 minutes each, with the Sun & Saturn and 4 stick markers. A quick glance allows the wearer to know the date pretty quickly. A bit of brain re-training is in order, but once done, the ease of use improves dramatically. The Day is at 6 o’clock with Sunday at the top, with Monday just to the left ad so on. Anti-clockwise again takes a bit of getting used to. The month is up top and also turns anti-clockwise with January at the top left. A solid case-back with the 2 piece case being water resistant to 100m works great for me. I love this watch!
