Ask any watch collector about Audemars Piguet, and I’m sure you’ll hear nothing but positive remarks about them. In particular, the Royal Oak is a true timeless, classic icon which in my view, should have a place in any serious watch collector’s collection. Up for review today is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15450ST 37mm version in steel with a white “Grande Tapisserie” dial.

When this model was first launched, it was launched as a ladies model. In fact, some still refer to this as the ladies version of the Royal Oak. I respectfully beg to differ – given the octagonal bezel, Royal Oaks tend to wear big and on my wrists (16 cm), I find the 37mm fits well (39mm would likely be the perfect fit but we all know its almost impossible to secure 15202s in steel today).

Another highlight of this piece is the integrated bracelet with the AP folding clasp. For those who have not seen it in person, it is simply a work of art – the way the light reflects off it is just remarkable, and to date, no other watch maker has been able to produce integrated bracelets that achieve a similar effect.

The clear case back provides you with a view of the stunning movement that combines the highest standard of aesthetics with the functionality of a 60 hour power reserve, and a date function.

I’ve read/heard about some complaining about Royal Oaks being scratch magnets, but I do not think it is any easier to scratch this watch than any other watch. I’m fortunately to have no scratches on my bezel and some minor scratches on the bracelet. To me, this is just part and parcel of wearing a watch (as opposed to keeping it in the safe), and I’ve no complaints on this front.

I got lucky with the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15450ST which was sitting in a display case years ago but today, a complaint one would have is it is now getting more and more difficult to acquire Royal Oaks, even for the so called ladies version!
