Vostok as a brand needs no introduction, at least not to the community of watch enthusiasts – everyone has at least heard of the Amphibia. But what about its less known (and not as handsome) older brother, the Vostok Komandirskie 650541? The chrome-plated cases, low water resistance and, more often than not, tongue-in-cheek dial designs have been a turn-off for many.
Vostok set on remedying this with the 650 Komandirskie line – solid, stainless steel cases, 200m of water resistance, toned down dials and some interesting complications, even a GMT! But we’re not going to talk about that one – I’m going to tell you about the Komandirskie with something perhaps more interesting – a 24 hour dial.
Watches with 24h dials are rare – with the exception of Glycine and perhaps Breitling, there really aren’t that many – especially not as affordable as the Vostok. There’s a certain allure about 24h watches – designed for polar explorers, submariners and astronauts, there’s a real sense of adventure about them. Some say getting used to reading the time will have a learning curve – I personally didn’t have any issues. It’s an interesting and quirky piece and a real conversation-starter. With an all-brushed case, it’s quite toned down and gives off a real tool watch vibe. Even the bracelet is an upgrade, compared to others from the brand – it’s by no means good, but at least it’s wearable. And the octagonal 41 x 49mm case makes it reasonably comfortable and wearable on the wrist.
If you’re in the search of something different or particularly a watch with a 24h dial, you can get it for a fraction of the price compared to the Swiss alternatives. If you’re looking to check that Vostok box in your collection, but don’t want to go for the obvious choice and get an Amphibia, this Vostok Komandirskie 650541 is a viable alternative, since it has everything the Amphibia has to offer, but with a different twist.
