The term lollipop comes up quite often when it comes to watches and not just with the Tudor Submariner 94010 Lollipop. It usually refers to either dial markers or watch hands. For the dial markers, it sometimes does resemble quite like a lollipop; the round dial marker, touching the straight minute marker, resembling a lollipop on a stick. But when it comes to the hands, most watch collectors and enthusiasts would normally think of the seconds hands, especially one with the round marker at the edge of the hand. Tudor however, had another type of lollipop hand- in certain Tudor Submariner models- reference 94010 & 76100; the lollipop hour hand, and in my opinion, remains as one of the rare hidden gems of Tudor vintages.
Typically, Rolex & Tudor shared similar 3 hand timepieces which featured the Merc hour hands. Then sometime in the mid 80s, Tudor started to feature the lollipop hour hand on the Submariners. For the 94010 Submariner dial, it has triangle markers at 3, 6, 9 & 12, giving it perfect symmetry, available in black & blue. I found a wonderfully blue shaded example of the Tudor Submariner 94010 Lollipop, and loved the clean & simple design. With an ETA 2776 movement, it provides easy maintenance and availability of spares. Water-proof Oyster case, robust ETA-based movement, & a clean symmetrical dial design made this in my books, a clear keeper and I love this design so much, I’ve even sourced a black variant. Incidentally, both watches are from 1984, & only 29 serials apart!
These lollipop hour hands were prone to cracking, right in the middle, and many examples were swapped out for the merc hands during service. This makes the Tudor Submariner 94010 Lollipop rarer and finding them intact and in original condition makes the acquisition & hunt, that little bit ‘sweeter’.
