Some say I’m biased towards Tudor, but I believe the Tudor Ranger M79950-001 is one of the best, and well put together pieces released by Tudor in recent times!
Released in 2022, the new iteration of the Tudor Ranger marks the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland expedition and epitomizes what it means to be a tool watch. Coming in at a sleek 39mm with a generally brushed finish (save for a touch of polished surfaces along the bezel edge and lug facets), I think it has an extremely utilitarian build that aptly echoes its functional heritage. This is further complemented by the non-riveted bracelet which is fitted with the “T-fit” clasp that allows for rapid length adjustment without the need for any tools, that is surprisingly easy to use! I’m not sure why Tudor only recently included “T-fit” clasps on the newer releases but I do hope Tudor uses this for all of its new releases going forward! One criticism I did have is the bracelet edges appear a little sharp and you’ll need to be careful when taking it off as you may scratch yourself while doing so.
The dial is clean with the 3-6-9-12 numerals with a faded black textured dial with a hint of red at the top of the second hand. While some may argue the Ranger has quite a basic look, I personally think it’s very well thought through and very much in line with its tool watch character. That said, one thought I did have is whether Tudor should have gone with a rose on the dial instead of the shield to give it a more heritage vibe.
On to the mechanics – equipped with Tudor’s in-house self-winding MT5402 which is COSC certified and has a power reserve of 70 hours. The watch case features 100m of water resistance which should be more than enough for most people.
At this price point the Tudor Ranger M79950-001 is an unbeatable piece, that would check most boxes if one was looking for a daily beater!
