It was 2017, our first cruise and a port stop in Grand Cayman. Somehow, I got it in my head that I was 40 and didn’t have a “nice watch”. So after a planned excursion, we planned on a bit of shopping before heading back to the ship (side note – on board the ship was a gift shop that carried Tag Heuer and Tissot). On second thoughts, I know where the “somehow” came from. We ended up at Kirk Freeport boutique and found myself focused on the a Tag Heuer Formula 1 Cayman Limited Edition on board the ship with a beautiful sunburst blue dial. This limited edition was a special Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation version only available in the Cayman Islands.
I couldn’t believe my wife would even consider granting her blessing spending roughly $1300 USD on a watch! But this was to serve as a memory of our amazing trip; was a limited edition and a donation would be made to ocean conservation. I felt guilty, but absolutely loved the watch, and a beer (or 2) while in the boutique made the decision easier. The rest is history. Within months I was watching the prominent YouTubers at the time learning and diving deeper into watches and Horology. Initially I felt foolish for dropping that amount of cash on a quartz TAG, but have since come to accept the watch and love it for opening me to a new hobby. Perhaps it also just rekindled a fire within as I always liked watches as a kid.
The watch… I love the dial. The colour and effect of the sunburst blue is my favorite, along with the applied Hammerhead Shark (my favorite shark) and Guy Harvey signature prominent on the lower half of the dial. The applied indices are crisp with excellent lume & the orange seconds hand hits every chapter mark bang on. The bracelet is very comfortable & the bezel is excellent. However, the most special thing is the fact that this Tag Heuer Formula 1 Cayman Limited Edition will soon be passed on to my son who loves it and the fond memories forged since.
