The Seiko SBDB015 Landmaster is a very opinionated, polarizing watch, and I like it that way. This tool watch has so much functionality packed in with a very funky cool design and it definitely isn’t for everyone.
The SBDB015 is such a great value, considering all of the features you get: A proper local jumping hour GMT, highly accurate Spring Drive movement (one of the cheapest ways to get into a Spring Drive) with 72 hour power reserve, titanium case and bracelet with diashield coating, supreme legibility, lume that glows so nicely, and a super cool design with a crown at twelve.
Why is the Seiko SBDB015 Landmaster so polarizing, then? Well, first off, the design. This watch has a crown at twelve, which necessitates that the watch is slightly thicker so the crown doesn’t get in the way of the bracelet. 14.2mm isn’t terrible, but this won’t fit under a dress shirt cuff. Most regular shirts are fine, though. The lugs are a nice and chunky 24mm. People either love or hate this watch — there is no “meh” with it.
To me, the benefits of this watch outweigh any perceived concerns. I am smitten. You get a Spring Drive GMT movement which is consistently +0.3 spd (yes, that’s zero point three seconds per day) whether on wrist or not. The GMT is a true local jumping hour. I love the skeletonized GMT hand. It doesn’t get in the way, yet is instantly visible against the matte black stepped dial. The titanium case and bracelet make this watch lighter than it looks on wrist, and with drilled lugs, you can throw any 24mm strap you want on this.
This watch is around $2600 USD, if you can still find one. The only disadvantage to me here is that this watch may be discontinued. If, like me, you’re drawn to a highly capable watch and enjoy an opinionated design, look no further than the Seiko SBDB015 Landmaster.
