The Seiko SARB035 is a modern classic for a reason. A definitive meeting of form and function, all while remaining humble and unassuming.
The SARB035 is a classically sized watch in a world of dinner plate dials. At 38mm in diameter, there is enough size to give some presence, but it doesn’t scream for attention. I won’t bore you with too many size specs. Suffice it to say, this watch feels proportional in all senses: Diameter, lug width/distance, and case thickness. The design calls to mind the subtle sophistication of an Oyster Perpetual or a Datejust, which I do love.
If this is your first step into mid-tier Seiko, you’ll likely be impressed. If it isnt, hell; you’ll probably still be impressed. The case (and bracelet) are a gorgeous mix of high polish and brushing, and the dial is a beautiful warm white/cream, depending on lighting. The dauphine hands and indices are tastefully lumed, and partnered to a classy, needle style second hand. Under the hood, and visible through the exhibition case back is Seiko’s esteemed 6R15 movement. It isn’t beautifully decorated, but it hacks, hand winds, and is reliable. Seiko even signed the crown!
The one place I feel this watch underwhelms is with its bracelet. Quality and aesthetic feel good, but this is let down by undersized end links that don’t quite feel optimized for the case. This, along with the fact that there are only 2 micro adjustments, and that the clasp doesn’t close flush to the bracelet, make you wonder what could have been had just a bit more time been taken. Luckily, because of its popularity, there are plenty of aftermarket bracelet options to be had.
Ultimately, I have found this Seiko SARB035 to be an exemplary daily piece. It happily dresses up or down, has enough water resistance to take a dip, and looks that will stand the test of time. Production may have ceased, but enthusiasm hasn’t!
