Rolex! An iconic brand bla bla bla…..but let’s go a bit into details….and have a look at this beautiful Rolex Day-Date 18239 White Gold.
The Day Date has been the crown jewel in the Rolex line for many decades. Nicknamed the “Rolex President or Presidential”, the Day Date was made out of gold (later platinum). The Day-Date is normally associated with a sort of success or great achievement. None of them, in my case.
I am a WIS (watch idiot savant) and the reason I got myself a Day-Date was for the horological marvel and elegance that it represents in the watch world. It took me years to trade up and save for this watch.
The piece that I ended up with is a 18239 in white gold. Most Day-Dates are yellow gold. White gold, rose gold, platinum and even tricolour examples are a lot rarer.
This 5 digit reference was the first one to have double-quick set functions. The movement is caliber 3155 and it was introduced in 1988. While I like the vintage look of a 4 digit reference DD, it is really practical to have the quick set, especially if you have several watches you wear on rotation.
It is a 36mm watch which for many, nowadays, is “too small” but, for me, it is just perfect. I would not consider the new 40mm Day Date. In my opinion the proportions are better on the classic 36mm size.
The 36mm Day-Date is for me the ultimate Rolex, the one to keep and enjoy for your whole life if you can get hold of one.
My Rolex Day-Date 18239 White Gold is 30 yrs old……but people think it’s a new watch. A testimony of how timeless it is and how well it was looked after by the previous owner.
