Owner Review: Rolex Milgauss White Dial 116400

Rolex Milgauss White Dial 116400

For my fifth Fifth Wrist review, I felt somewhat obligated, for the first time, to review a Rolex. Moans and groans from the readers, at this point? Though this is not, in my subjective opinion, a ‘run of the mill’ Rolex (pardon the pun…). This Rolex Milgauss White Dial 116400 exudes fun, plus it is quirky and irreverent.

Whilst I am not a scientist and have no need at all for a watch that can withstand heavy magnetic fields, I don’t suppose many of you need a helium release valve when in the swimming pool, or to be able to tell the time in three time-zones simultaneously when you rarely leave one time zone? Or for those desperate for a Daytona, do you actually time racing cars doing laps?

The Milgauss is actually a simple, time only Rolex and for me it presents as a sportier alternative to buying an Oyster Perpetual or any other high quality time only automatic watch. It has all of the features that are so craved in this hyped Rolex sports watch era – it is 40mm, it is fully stainless steel, COSC certified, a decent power reserve, 100 metres of water resistance and it has an Oyster bracelet with the Easylink comfort extension system. But for me – unlike so many other lauded Rolex sports watch – the Milgauss with the white dial has a unique character and personality. On the wrist the wearer feels not only that he or she is wearing a special timepiece, a ‘proper’ Rolex sports watch, but that one is wearing something which is both rare and idiosyncratic. The white dial allows the orange markers and lightning bolt hand to stand out in a way which they do not on the black or blue GV dial versions. Which is great if, like me, you adore the colour orange!

If you are seeking a Rolex sports watch with a playful side and a dash of rarity, this discontinued Rolex Milgauss White Dial 116400 may be the one for you.

Great review! I completely agree with you, the Milgauss straddles the line between dress/sports/tool in a way that really adds to its appeal. I’m an electrical engineer, I go to meeting but also into high voltage substations. That’s why this is my grail watch and I hope to one day own one.
