Owner Review: Rolex Submariner 16610 M Series by @omar_luxury_

Rolex Submariner 16110

The Rolex Submariner is probably the most iconic watch of all time, to the point it is ubiquitous. From experienced collectors who have Comex 5514s to people who just want a quality watch, a Submariner is preferred by almost anybody, and are cornerstones to many collections. Though the design hasn’t changed significantly in more than a half century, the Submariner has gone through quite a few changes. My preferred version of the Submariner is the last series of the aluminum bezel, pre-maxi case, the 16610 M series or serial. It is a very short run only from 2008-2010 and the M serial Subs are distinguished by the inner rehaut.

Rolex Submariner 16110 nato
The 16110 looks as good on a nato strap as it does on the bracelet.

What makes the 16610 possibly the best sub ever? For starters the proportions are near perfect, it is thinner, the lugs are thin and the overall 40mm wears more like a 38. The watch pertains the look and feel of something like a 1680 vintage Sub without it being as delicate as a vintage watch, it is equipped with the recently discontinued 3135 movement which was used till 2020, it is accurate, anti magnetic and durable. The watch is also a strap monster, looks perfect on a nato, leather and rubber strap. Frankly the newer generation 116610 and 126610 thought works well with rubber straps but don’t look quite right on a nato or leather strap compared to the 16610.

The “weak” point of this watch, most would argue, is the bracelet. It has hollow links and a thin stamped metal clasp which does not have the solidity that the new generation Subs have. Sure, the new bracelet is far more refined and solid in construction but I would say from experience I have found the older generation bracelets more comfortable. For me, these reasons make it the perfect Submariner, it perfectly intertwines vintage and modern. It is a watch that just works for me and it’s a watch that is just meant to be worn and used. It might not be the most interesting or exciting watch out there but it is certainly a great daily wearer. If I had to “retire” from watch collecting and have one watch it would certainly be the 16610 Submariner.

Pros:
– near perfect proportions!

– strap monster

better value compared to the newer Submariners!

Cons
– some might find it boring

– aluminum bezel scratches a lot easier compared to ceramic

nothing else!
