It was a day in June and at that time I had no idea, that at 4 PM, I was going to purchase an Oris 65. I knew Oris from my good friend, fellow watch nerd and big Oris fan, Jasper. He has a nice collection of Oris all super cool watches, one of them an Oris RedBar Diver 65, with of course an awesome dial (we started the RedBar Copenhagen chapter together).
In the afternoon I got the usual mails from Fratello Watches, Hodinkee, and the usual suspects, and as I am a Speedy fan I started skimming the Fratello mail and one picture stood out! A Diver 65 Hodinkee, so I quickly got to the Hodinkee site, more pictures! And it was up for sale… Only 250 watches were made, and as I remember they sold out in 8 minutes. It was a no brainer for 2300$ and suddenly I had a very special Oris diver 65!
As I have a weak spot for divers and the 65 ticks so many boxes, I don’t know where to start! I have worn it in all imagined situations, job, sports, beach, and snorkeling – both on the bracelet and an Erika’s Original strap and it wears so easy in both configs and on the Erika’s I don’t notice that I am wearing it at all. It also comes with a leather strap, I haven’t used it, but it looks great and adds to the vintage look.
From the looks perspective, the watch is very well balanced and all the vintage details make me forget that there still is a warranty on this watch! Sitting by the sea and looking at all the details is a joy, the domed crystal, ghosted bezel, and matt black/gray dial.
It’s an Oris 730 manual hand-wound movement, and as a speedy fan, that’s not a showstopper, on the contrary, it gives me a closer connection and joy with the watch, and I would encourage anyone who does not have a manual watch to try it out. It’s special.
