Owner review: Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonphase

Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonphase

Whilst many object to the number of editions of the Omega Speedmaster, others celebrate the differences in detail each piece offers. My favourite is the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonphase reference 3575.20.

When I first set out to add a speedmaster to my collection, I was torn between a traditional moonwatch or something a little different. Hours of pondering led me to this abnormal Speedmaster Professional Moonphase combined with the chronograph of the traditional “speedy” pro – an overlooked gem from the late 90s to early 00s.

Aesthetically the face of this watch seduced me. The 18 Carat white gold bezel frames a beautifully composed ivory dial. The dial is more of a textured eggshell sharpened with blue monochrome broad-arrow hands and indices. The subdials are well balanced and detailed with more blue monochrome micro hands. The moonphase itself is a composition of blue monochrome and white gold which never fails to catch the eye in good lighting. I was captured on the visualisation alone and trying it on in person only cemented my “need” to own it.

This Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonphase stays true to the traditional moonwatch case diameter at 42mm which sits nicely on my modest 7.5 inch wrist. I’m sure it would also look striking on a larger wrist size. Under the hood it boasts the manual wind movement 1866, a modified version of the calibre 1861 to facilitate the addition of the date and moonphase complications with a 48 hour power reserve. Like any speedy pro, the options to pair it with many different straps offer an endless change of looks – something I do often and it feels like a new watch every time.

A final observation is that despite the endless number of editions Omega seem to release, the Omega “fanboy” in me has never felt the itch to add or update to a more modern version. I enjoy wearing the Speedmaster Professional Moonphase and it probably gets the most of my wrist time.

Sporty enough to wear daily and dressy enough to slide under a cuff, this favourite of mine exudes the timeless presence of the traditional moonwatch plus so much more.
