Owner review: MB&F Legacy Machine LM101

MB&F Legacy machine LM101

It is hard to believe that someone would say that Max Busser can’t actually design a watch! There have been many who have dared to criticise his horological machines. Some have been so bold as to say that he can only create toys! From my perspective, the MB&F Legacy Machine LM101 makes a very clear statement of watchmaking brilliance that should silence all critics forever.

The MB&F Legacy Machine LM101 has the form of a simple round cased watch. This piece from MB&F best illustrates how important it is to show creativity when making watches. Most brands refuse to move outside of a very conservative approach to making watches.

The most exciting part of a mechanical watch for me is its beating heart. The mechanism that releases energy to accurately move hands that tell us the time. The MB&F Legacy Machine LM101 displays its pulsing escapement and balance wheel front and centre of the watch. The balance wheel is beautifully suspended. This is both brilliant and crazy, it is mesmerising and impossibly perfect. It must take a lot for a brand to invest in all that human ability and mechanical wizardry to make it happen!

It is just as exciting when you turn the watch over. There to greet you is a very big name, Kari Voutilainen. This immediately tells you that the standard and finishing of this movement are at the very highest level of the classic Swiss Watch industry.

I have been recently told that the waiting list for a MB&F Legacy Machine LM101 is many many years. However this was not always the case. Not very long ago, back only 3 to 4 years ago, it used to sell at a discount from the retailer!

I’m glad that finally the market is responding to the creativity in fine watchmaking that MB&F positively displays. At the same time though I’m sad as many watches like this are no longer easily accessible and affordable!
