As unique as it may be, the Enicar Sherpa OPS Super Compressor was probably missed by the collectors of the past, often overshadowed by its bigger friends of Submariner, Seamaster and the like. Usually unnoticed in watch fairs, it certainly lacked the attention that it should have drawn.
With the huge variety in diving watches, the compressors certainly command a class of their own. Among the many doubled-crowned, oversized compressors, I think the OPS is an exceptional one.
The first thing that one would remark is that special crown guard in between the two crowns. It is more than just a crown guard. In fact, it is the only one I know of that is designed in such a manner. The story I heard is that this special crown guard is to keep seaweeds from being entangled between the crowns. What a story!
The next distinctive feature is its PVD case. Today, we take it for granted as PVD watches are commonly found, but not so in those days. A little search on the web will tell you that there are probably only less than a handful of watches made with PVD finishing during that period. This piece that is in my care is simply immaculate! Another aspect of the OPS is the bright colours on the dial, which simply accentuates the entire look of this spectacular watch.
As in my previous review on the ZRC on this blog, the caseback design of this Enicar Sherpa OPS Super Compressor is nothing less than remarkable. Just take a look at the effort in designing something that will be hidden most of the time!
Although being fairly big, measuring about 40mm, this watch rests snugly and is very comfortable on the wrist. The crown guard not only serves its primary purpose in keeping seaweeds out, but it also prevents the crown from accidentally turning the inner bezel. If you have one of these, I know that it is no longer overlooked and I am certain that it is a head turner in this modern day.
