In the early 50’s the Ernest Hemingway novel “The old man and the sea” renewed the charm of the challenge between man and the sea. In response to this incredibly successful novel, many watch maisons created diving watches. One such watch was the iconic Eberhard Scafograf 200.
Eberhard & Co launched the Scafograf collection composed of waterproof watches rated anywhere from 100 to 300 meters. Today we will be presenting reference 11536, this was the very first Scafograf with a rotating bezel and big crown (as seen on Rolex 6538 and 5510 of the same period). This very useable dive watch featured an elastic bracelet produced by the now legendary Gay Freres.
This iconic Eberhard Scafograf 200 stands out from the other divers of that period due to the big triangles perfectly located at 3, 6, 9 and 12 and the large triangle on the hour hand. In the early version, you can see the dramatic glossy dial without any circled indexes. Please make sure and take note that the luminous material used on this watch is radium. In the subsequent production runs and on the 300 model we will find matt dials and circled indexes. The case measures in at about 38mm (smaller than the twisted lugs version) and has 18mm end links. The bracelet clasp is short and with signed and dated blades.
