The first time I saw the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Tough Titanium, I thought it was hideous. The dial looked cluttered, with its oversized Arabic numerals, the white luminescent markers contrasting sharply against the blue dial (it also comes in black). Also, it was a Citizen. And a quartz. Who would pay so much (£300)? It turns out that I would.
I was looking for a new watch, and I wanted a ‘beater’: something water resistant, and something that was light. I wear a watch when running and anyone who has tried to run wearing a Seiko Samurai knows why I had these things on my wish list! I read about the Promaster Tough and, after a while, I couldn’t get it out of my head. It wasn’t hideous, I realised, but designed with function in mind, rather than form: extremely legible, very practical and packed with features that really live up to its name of ‘tough’.
I am really happy with this watch. It has a super titanium case, which is 40mm, perfect for my 6 ¼ inch wrist. The strap is Kevlar, with brushed hardware. Again, super tough. It also had 300m WR, a monocoque case, and it is anti magnetic, resistant to extreme temperatures, and is powered by an Eco Drive movement, powered by light, which according to Citizen means it will never need a new battery.
I bought the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Tough Titanium in a shopping mall about 2 weeks before this coronavirus thing started to kick off, which means two things. First, it is probably on sale now. Secondly, if the apocalypse does arrive, I have the perfect piece.
