The story of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is a rarity in that it is undisputed. The Fifty Fathoms series were the first watches designed specifically for diving. This latest Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barakuda Limited Edition harks back to the FF watches of the early 1960’s when diving equipment company Barakuda were suppliers to numerous elite military units, leading to this distinctive model becoming known as the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barakuda. While a modern interpretation rather than an exact replica, it retains the distinctive red tipped indices, cardinal numbers and domed crystal of the original.
Perfectly sized at 40mm with short straight lugs and a wonderfully domed crystal bezel with small serrations around its circumference, it wears very comfortably and easily slips under a cuff when desk diving in order to pay for this affliction of ours.
The hand set is reminiscent of the original but have been maxi’d here, a worthy update balancing the large square luminous indices well. The faux patina tone used is absolutely bang on, and only adds to the nostalgic feel, rather than looking overdone as so many are. Many will admonish the firm for keeping the date window, but it reflects the original, and is well executed with real thought having been applied initially to make it a cohesive part of the overall design. The rubber ‘tropic’ strap is another outstanding feature, certainly the best iteration I’ve seen.
Turning the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barakuda over, one is treated to a fabulously finished movement as one would expect from a brand of such pedigree. Although superfluous to its function, it is comforting to know that the quality of finish extends to its inner workings.
Limited to 500 pieces, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barakuda is hard to come by, and given how well it wears is unlikely to be let go by those who are lucky enough to have one. If you get the chance, jump at it, you won’t regret it.
