The watch industry has become quite polarized in the past few years. Unprecedented hype and demand for certain brands have tainted the “fun of collecting.” This has made watches seem primarily like status symbols or commodities to flip. Yet, there are brands that offer great value and fun watches that fulfill the joy of watch collecting. Oris is one of them. I have always liked Oris. It has always been an honest brand that offers quality watches at a decent price range.
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Father Time Limited Edition was to become my first Oris. The Big Crown, with its combination of a bronze case and white dial, was extremely compelling, and I love the vintage aesthetics of the Big Crown. This watch was not only my first Oris but also my first bronze watch. I wasn’t experienced with the metal before and was, frankly, a bit anxious about how it would patina and how to clean it off. Initially, the watch looked almost like rose gold, but now, after three months of wear, it looks better than before. The contrast of the white dial and the patina on the case is amazing. The patina is probably one of the most fun aspects of owning a bronze watch—it is exciting to see the watch change after months of ownership.
The watch comes with both a Cervo Volante deer leather strap and a bronze bracelet. The case measures 40mm, and the coin-edge bezel is also a nice nostalgic touch to the watch. It is equipped with a Sellita movement, which is a great workhorse that is tough and reliable. Overall, this Oris Big Crown Father Time is charming, interesting, and unique—something that would fit into practically any collection.
