When I first tried the Tudor Black Bay 58 925 I didn’t like it. Why would one make a waterproof/dive watch with an easily scratching metal and a leather strap? And the taupe dial didn’t pop in the harsh shop lights. But there was something about it that made me take a second look, and finally, I got to really like it.
Tudor doesn’t make silver pieces often, so this one is a bit of a rare one for them. Price wise it is very reasonable and almost in line with other Black Bays.
Silver scared me at first, but Tudor claims to have a special silver alloy that doesn’t tarnish over time, and to date I haven’t seen any tarnishing (note – tarnish is oxidization and doesn’t happen if a watch is always on the wrist, due to the oils on the skin) – or so they say. For a chick that “matches” jewellery bracelets with the watches – the Tudor Black Bay 58 925 is surprisingly versatile and easy to match with, and I haven’t scratched it….. Yet!
The colour of the dial and bezel is actually quite spectacular. In the right lighting it is almost like a chameleon and a different strap makes the different shades of grey stand out (try a green strap to get an amazing contrast).
Unlike any other BB58’s (other than the gold one) the 925 has an open case back and like others, it has a stunning satin finish. I find that the 39mm case is really comfortable on my chicken wrist.
With an MT5400 (COSC) movement, like other Tudors, it is precise, and has a power reserve of around 70 hours. The Tudor Black Bay 58 925 has a nice weight and height to it – it is definitely heavier than its stainless steel brothers, but not annoyingly heavy for a slender wrist. It sits well and doesn’t wobble. The strap is easy to swap out to give it a more dressy or sporty look. It also works well with a MN strap for those who prefer to shower/swim with their watch on.
It is unlike a stainless steel watch. in direct sunshine the silver really stands out and gives off an amazing lustre. The lume is vintage green, quite bright and very appealing.
Tudor black bay watches are Iike Pokémon – once you have one, you are drawn to them and want to collect them all.
