Is the Grand Seiko Skyflake SBGA407 the perfect watch?
Grand Seiko is possibly one of the most incredible watch manufacturers, in my opinion, making watches today. Grand Seiko offers a wide array of watches in their catalog with different horological innovations that are unique to their brand.
Grand Seiko’s innovations include the spring drive movement, which is a hybrid of quartz and mechanical, which took almost 3 decades to create. It features an accuracy of +/-15 seconds a month, impressive? …..it is only the beginning.
Grand Seiko, for me, sits in a class of its own, I have owned and handled a large number of their watches during my years of collecting. Grand Seiko always seems to impress me where the other brands don’t.
The combination of value for money, quality, and technology is unmatched by watches that cost a lot more than for instance a Grand Seiko Skyflake SBGA407. Zaratsu polishing is another core feature of the watches coming out of GS. This is a unique method of polishing, reminiscent of black polishing.
The Skyflake SBGA407 hands, indices and case are hand polished giving it a unique shine, unparalleled to anything in the price bracket. The nickname of this watch is the “skyflake”, which comes from the dial colour and texture portraying the sky.
The Grand Seiko Skyflake SBGA407 case is 39mm and it fits the wrist perfectly as the lugs are beautifully tapered and the overall proportion makes it a perfect companion for my wrist.
I look for watches that offer good value and the Grand Seiko Skyflake SBGA407 is the epitome of this displaying refined finishing and an innovative movement for the price point. It seems to me that certain Swiss brands are beginning to cut corners to be more competitive.
The Grand Seiko SBGA407 is certainly one of my favourite watches in my collection. After owning it for a little over a month I find myself wearing it more often than any other watch, it is simply perfect!
