39mm 39mm 39mm I’ve been hearing that in my head more than I hear the phrase pop of color from watch reviewers on YouTube. So when I heard the Tudor Ranger 79950 was released, I called the ADs in town and 11 days later I was lucky enough to get the first one in.
So why did I buy it? I missed having a Tudor in my collection. I had the BB58 and sold it. It’s a great watch but I had a few issues with it. I’m not a fan of the snowflake hand. I think it’s because I like my watch hands to end with some kind of a point. And the wide snowflake hand just bothered me. My second issue was the gilt. I didn’t feel it made sense for a tool watch and third and most important the bracelet. I hated the faux rivets. I would have hated them more if they were real rivets. And I never got the watch to sit right on my wrist on the bracelet. I sold it, and I missed having a Tudor in my collection. So when I saw the Tudor Ranger 79950 I thought, I’m going to buy this watch and figure out if I like it later. I really hope I fall in love with it.
As I’m writing this review I’ve only had the watch on my wrist for about 48 hours. But here’s what I got to say. I love the finishing on the case and bracelet. It’s 99% brushed and that is amazing! I love the vintage style lume application directly on the dial. I love how simple everything on the dial is. Tudor shield, the word Tudor and Geneve at 12 o’clock, and just “Ranger” at 6 o’clock. People have said there is a lot of empty space. That’s what I love most. We all need a little more empty space in our lives. I love the boxed domed crystal. It gives just enough of distortion to that beautiful “6” as I roll my wrist to see the time. The main part of the watch gets a perfect score from me. Plus I can confirm this watch is a strap monster. I started cutting up some natos. Not shredding them, just cutting off that extra bit that’s pointless, and strapping them on this way and I think I will wear more natos now. I won’t cut off the extra bit of my Fifth Wrist nato because that keeper has the”not for sale” text on it so I’ll just deal with that lumpiness with a smile on my face.
Ok, the bracelet. Everyone is singing praises about this bracelet. It’s a very good bracelet. But it does not come close to a Rolex oyster bracelet. I have to say that. Do not think these two are the same. They may look the same but they are not. The edges of the bracelet are sharp. The edges of the clasp are even sharper. So if you wear this watch tight it will leave a mark and if you wear this watch loose and keep your arm up it will dig in and leave a mark. But if you get the fit right it will be ok. The TFit clasp plays a huge role in getting the fit right. I deal with extreme temperature changes all day every day, so I need to make changes and I’m happy that I can with this buckle.
It’s only been a few days but the Tudor Ranger 79950 solved my issues with Tudor. No snowflake hand, no gilt, and a bracelet without rivets that I can get right on my wrist! Plus it’s an all brushed simple no nonsense watch that will look great on a bracelet or anything you can think of.
I’m judging this watch harshly. I’m holding it to a very high standard. I was genuinely thinking as I was driving to the AD, if I don’t like it I’ll sell it. I started by putting the Tudor Ranger in a hole and wanted to see if it could climb out. It has climbed out. If you want a no frills no bling simple watch that will handle anything, I think this is the watch for you. I hope to travel with my family for a long over due holiday and I’m excited to take just one watch with me. It will be this Ranger… maybe I’ll bring some tools and straps maybe I won’t either way Im not too worried about it because this watch was bought to be forgotten on the wrist and in these last two days it’s proving to be able to do just that.
