Owner review: Corum Bubble – One of a kind

Corum Bubble

Watch brand Corum and its conspicuous Corum Bubble design either makes others gawk in amazement or bring on Jim Carrey’s gag at an instant. In early 2000s Corum and Panerai continued the “big watch” trend Invicta was well known for.

This piece has a 44mm case, 54mm lug height and 20mm super high dome sapphire crystal ensuring no wrist real estate goes untouched. It is a beast of a watch and its design commands attention. I mentioned Panerai because if we look at watches issued by Panerai to the Italian Navy back in the 1970s, it is clear some design inspiration was taken by Corum on its crystal design. The first Corum Bubble was introduced in 2000. This model reference 82.150.20 was released in 2010 which marks the 55th year anniversary of the brand and death of one of its founders René Bannwart.

Corum Bubble

When I wear this watch I feel different with a slight confidence boost. I’m not sure if it’s the weight on the wrist, but it seems to bring a level of self-awareness that other watches in my collection simply don’t offer. Glancing at the wrist I find there is a trippy light dispersion effect that is never the same and I love it.

Although this is a large watch the wearability is a 10. Because of how the lugs curve down past the case-back, the watch hugs the wrist tight and in turn does not feel as large. I will say, if your wrist is 6.25-6.75 inches in circumference, you might want to opt for a 36mm version. You can also explore other dial variations to match your personality.

In a watch world where homages to homages are now a thing, this watch holds true to its original design and breaks from the sometimes-boring world of divers and chronographs. The dial, crystal, band, case and clasp make the Corum Bubble a true standout that will surely outlast simple watch designs.

Corum Bubble

I don’t get many compliments on wristwatches, but when I do, Corum Bubble holds the record for personal compliments (not on social media). On social media, the obvious consensus is the Corum Bubble is “not my cup of tea” and it clearly does not fit the current trend of smaller sized watches. As a watch collector, it is important that my collection is diverse to match different occasions and styles. Corum Bubble plays its role in my collection very well and never fails to put a smile on my face.

If you own a Corum Bubble congrats. You hold a piece of art. May you wear it in health for many years to come. Peace.
