Owner Review: Omega Speedmaster Legend Michael Schumacher

Omega Speedmaster Legend Michael Schumacher

If you know me, it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Omega and this Omega Speedmaster Legend Michael Schumacher is a great example of why. From the brand’s historical and cultural importance (WW2, going to space, James Bond, etc.) to the quality of craftsmanship (see the five-link bracelet on Seamaster 300M and master chronometer movements) and then to the fact that you can actually purchase their watches at retail, are just some of the reasons to love the brand.

As an Omega fan-boy, I knew that I had to have a Speedmaster; however, I tend to prefer sportier/flashier watches, and the Moonwatch and First Omega in Space Speedmasters were just not speaking to me. As my search continued, I came across the new Speedmaster racing released in 2017, which I loved, but was a bit out of my price range.

I was ready to admit defeat and start to go down the used Zenith El Primero or Tag Heuer Autavia chrono route, when I stumbled upon a reverse panda limited-edition Omega Speedmaster Legend Michael Schumacher. When I finally had the opportunity to try on the watch it was love at first sight. The Formula 1 inspired speedy was produced from 2005 to 2009 to commemorate Michael Schumacher‘s recording-breaking F1 titles. The automatic 42MM ref 3507.51.00 is powered by Omega’s 3301 movement, is water-resistant to 100 meters, and has a 52-hour power reserve

This piece oozes cool and is infused with the purpose of the original Speedmaster, which of course was built to race, not for outer space.

I absolutely love that I’m able to have a Speedmaster with all of the classic technical aspects and design features you expect (tachymetre, subdials, etc.) while still having something different and unique on the wrist, with the reverse panda dial providing an extra design pop.

When purchasing a watch, I’m guided primarily by two factors: 1) Will I enjoy wearing it and 2) Will it provide me with an opportunity to strike up a random conversation with another watch enthusiast. In just a few weeks of ownership, the Omega Speedmaster Legend Michael Schumacher has checked those two boxes many times over. If you love Speedmasters, racing, or are looking for a great chronograph that might be a bit under the radar, this is a fantastic option.
