Owner Review: Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Red Dial

Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Red Dial

Last year, when I saw the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with the red (oxblood) dial, I knew, that I “needed” to have that watch in my collection. The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is overall a really great watch to own. This particular model comes in both 36mm and 40mm. My watch features the 40mm case size and it fits my 16.5cm wrist perfectly.

The well executed steel case is beautifully polished on both sides, and the lugs are brushed along the top. My Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Red Dial has a really impressive bracelet, it feels both solid and well made. The bracelet uses pins instead of more expensive screws, but that is the only downside. The clasp has a nice finish to it. Maybe some will miss the micro adjustment, but it doesn’t bother me too much. Oris uses the tried and tested Sellita SW-200 movement in this watch. An Oris made pointer date module is used, but other than that, it is a pretty standard Sellita movement. In my opinion, Oris could have done some in-house finishing to the movement, but I can’t argue that the movement works fine and the service cost is low.

Now for the best part: the stunning ox blood dial! The dial is simply amazing and really on point. I can’t explain how beautiful the red color is, and how it shines in the sun. In my humble opinion it is one of the best dials ever made – without a doubt! The watch features (vintage inspired) cathedral hands, along with a very simple second hand. The little red tipped date hand, the perfectly sized big crown and the coin-edged bezel match the watch incredibly well. In my opinon, Oris is one of the best brands in the watch world right now.
