Owner Review: Citizen Promaster Diver Ecozilla BJ 8050-08e

The Citizen Promaster Diver Ecozilla BJ 8050-08e is one very awesome model made by the Japanese watchmaking powerhouse. With a case width of 48mm, a thickness of 18.6mm and around 165g of weight, it deserves the friendly but imposing name of Eco-Zilla.

When I chose it, I was looking for a summer mate and this big boy is wide but it wears pretty trim because there are no lugs and the rubber strap drops immediately across your wrist, so the Zilla wears smaller than it looks. Obviously it’s a “tall” guy, it’s gonna get knocked into “things”, but in the end the problems will be for “the things” so, who cares?

The case is massive, the bezel is tight but turns smoothly…you just feel the pure steel on your arm. The crown (I confess, I don’t like it!) is a bit fiddly, can be a little tough to catch the threads when you’re screwing it down and is on the left side of the case. This does require that you take the watch off to adjust it, but thanks to the Eco-Drive technology that Citizen uses we don’t really need to adjust more than once or twice per year.

The Citizen Calibre B873 boasts an impressive 180-day power reserve and when you lie in the sun it will be fully charged in a few hours and what better excuse to stop diving?

The dial is black and it looks small compared to the case and the super large numbers on the bezel. The hands are oversized and the minute hand is orange so the whole dial is very legible and it’s also legible in the dark, where the blue lume is super bright.

The crystal is a little bit of a different story. It’s a flat mineral crystal and a sapphire crystal would have been better! Special mention for the case-back, I’m in love with the engraved diver! For sure Zilla’s natural environment is underwater, it also has a very good fit with sportswear.

Finally, if you are looking for an excellent tool watch at an affordable price – then this Citizen Promaster Diver Ecozilla BJ 8050-08e is perfect for you!
