Does this Casio GR3 Moon Fight Robot represent misplaced nostalgia?

Was the world really that much of a better place thirty plus years ago? Or is it just because we associate certain memories of growing up as a kid with these wonderful futuristic gadgets? Maybe those positive memories just make us think that those times were better than they actually were.

Well in keeping with my ongoing theme of retro watch reviews, let’s go back to the future all the way to 1985 ( when the film was in fact released). We are going to grab a watch from that era and bring it back to 2020! Confused? Here is the Casio GR3 Moon Fight Robot gaming watch. Who didn’t own one of these and play with it in the back of the class or  were even unlucky enough to have had it confiscated? They were, along with the data bank watches of that time the first ‘smart’ watches.

What was probably a £20 watch back then is now going to cost you anywhere between £150-300 for a decent example in fairly good condition.

The Casio GR3 Moon Fight Robot is tiny, cheaply made, plastic and very flimsy but boy does it feel good to strap this little beauty back onto my wrist!

My aim is just to wear this as a daily watch but not to play the game, as I am worried that if anything breaks, it could prove very difficult to have fixed. Will these time capsules be worth a lot more in years to come? Probably not, but this is about owning a piece of digital watchmaking history for what is very little outlay if you consider it. Look after it and it should keep going for years. Heck, it might even just make it into the ‘heirloom’ category!
