Owner Review: Rolex Milgauss Z Blue 116400GV

Milgauss Z Blue 116400GV

When it comes to hyped steel sports models, the Rolex Milgauss Z Blue 116400GV is often overlooked. The Milgauss reference 6541 was first introduced in 1956 with the lightning bolt seconds hand and was designed for engineers and scientists. The name Milgauss came from the French word “mille” which means a thousand and “Gauss” which is a unit of measurement of magnetic flux density. The first Milgauss has anti magnetic property of 1000 Gauss. It wasn’t a popular watch and was discontinued in 1988 and reintroduced in 2007.

Rolex released the modern Milgauss in 2 dial variations, black and white dial, both with an orange lightning bolt seconds hand and orange accent on the dial. The Rolex Milgauss Z Blue 116400GV came out in 2014 sporting an electric blue dial with orange accent and green crystal. You probably think those colours wouldn’t work together and what have Rolex been smoking or drinking when they made it? Trust me they work really well.

I have worn the Milgauss over the last 3-4 days and I love the way the dial looks under the sun, the colour explosion is just stunning, however on a cloudy day it can look washed out, I wonder if Rolex had put an anti reflective coating on their watches, that might solve the problem? The watch sits higher on the wrist compared to the Datejust 41mm that I previously owned but that didn’t bother me at all and it fits under the cuff just as easily. It is also slightly more comfortable than my Rolex Submariner which now feels heavier compared to the Milgauss. Some people might not like polished links on the bracelet but I like shiny things so that works for me.

After the recent price rise of Rolex, a brand new Milgauss retails for $8900 USD and the equivalent DJ41 on steel is $8200 USD and it comes with a new movement and a date function, so value is definitely not the strong point of this watch, but if you are fun loving and youth spirited like me then you’ll get the Milgauss.
