The legendary Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller is a Big watch… The capital B has very much been used on purpose. Coming in at a seemingly huge 44mm in size, it doesn’t sit as wide as many large Panerai dive watches, but it is the acrophobia inducing height of 17.7mm that makes it feel a touch unwieldy, especially when you are wearing it on the commonly preferred bracelet.
The bracelet in question is narrow, so the watch case housing the Rolex 3235 movement can seem very top heavy. The trick is to pop the watch on a rubber strap and it will instantly become far more wearable (at least that is what I found to be the case) The Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller works well in pretty much every lifestyle situation, although non custom shirt cuffs can prove to be a bit of a stretch, literally.
The ‘standard’ and universally loved Sea Dweller might be a more useable everyday watch for most people – but I personally like the fact that Rolex really stepped out of the box with this one. Let’s be honest, they aren’t exactly known for going crazy when it comes to designing their watches (except maybe with the Milgauss) but with this one, they really went for it. I think that is something that needs to be more applauded in the often conservative world of Swiss watches.
As with all hyped up steel Rolex it has held its value well, though I’m a firm believer in buying watches to use, not as investments. Still, there is no harm in not throwing money out of the window.
Overall I really enjoy this watch, it’s got great presence on the wrist. It even wears surprisingly comfortably for such a big old chunk of steel. Plus it is just different to a standard Rolex Submariner.
