When we hear quintessential dive watch, many will think of the Rolex Submariner but it was Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms that was the first true iteration of the modern dive watch. Released in 1953 and then relaunched in 2007, Blancpain has produced many variations but I think the purest form is reserved for its 40mm limited release pieces. It is here we find the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III or BOC III.
The BOC III was produced in 250 pieces with a brilliant blue sunburst dial, marked with the Ocean Commitment logo to exemplify Blancpain’s dedication to preserving our oceans. It bears the characteristic domed sapphire crystal and bezel, mounted on a stainless-steel case with vertical brushed satin finish. It’s lumed indices are easy to read and when combined with the bezel, provides excellent legibility in all lights. Short guards protect a well gnarled crown that provides ample grip for easy setting. The piece also comes with both blue sailcloth and nato straps, in keeping with the ocean theme.
While the dial is a pleasure to behold, the sapphire exhibition case back is no slouch. There you can view the beautifully hand finished movement and Blancpain’s gold rotor, finished in NAC (platinum alloy) to give a grey hue. This chronometer rated, antimagnetic movement also boasts a 4-day power reserve and silicone hairspring.
I have been wearing this watch as my daily piece for the last 3-4 months and think it goes with everything. From suits in the office, to a polo shirt on the weekend when I am relaxing the friends and family. The movement has also proven robust enough to keep up with my 2-year old’s play schedule. You see, I like watches that can keep up with my real life and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III, is up to that challenge.
