Editorial: First Impressions of the Tudor Black Bay P01

Tudor Black Bay P01

The Tudor Black Bay P01, a watch nobody asked for but everyone got at Baselworld 2019. What we are looking at here is an impressively faithful modern reproduction of a watch that was once proposed to the US Navy. Tudor is pushing the boundaries and releasing something that is unlike any other watch on the market. However, I’m not sure I can compliment the Tudor Black Bay P01 for much more than that.

The P01 is very much divisive and its aesthetics are a big contributor to that discussion. For me, there is a reason this watch didn’t make it into production. The 42mm diameter is reasonable but the enormous lug to lug distance paired with its sheer heft makes this watch as comfortable on the wrist as putting your shoes on the opposite feet. The rubber lined leather strap with deployant clasp makes a good attempt of securing this hunk to my wrist, but the battle is futile as the Tudor Black Bay P01’s large footprint proves too bulky.

I’m not sure why a leather strap is paired with a dive watch but I imagine anybody who buys this timepiece is not after a technical diving companion, rather a conversation starter. And a what a conversation starter this is! The individual who buys this watch will be unapologetic for going against the general consensus that this one ugly timekeeper, but revel in the fact they wear a watch that doesn’t appeal to the masses and is beautiful to them. From the P01’s end links, locking bezel to its unique proportions, this watch gives a big middle finger to convention and I absoloutely respect anyone who purchases this watch for going against the grain. Aesthetics aside, the level of finishing and function is at the high level we all expect from Tudor.

So, one of the most contentious releases of 2019 is not at all for me. But it might be for you and that is more than okay!
