The Seiko Alpinist Green SARB017 comes from a line of field watch which was first introduced in 1961. The Alpinist can be described as Seiko’s first real sports watch. It is from the sixth generation of the Alpinist line and was introduced in 2009. It is also one of Seiko’s longest running sub-brands.
The Case
The stainless steel case is classic, elegantly shaped and measures a very wearable 39mm. It has a thickness of 12mm, lug to lug width of about 46mm and has a very desirable lug width of 20mm. This versatile timepiece looks great on all kinds of bracelets, leather straps, natos and also has a plethora of bracelets dedicated to it by many brands.
The outer bezel is polished and has a flat sapphire crystal. It has a signed crown at the 3 o’clock position and another crown at the 4 o’clock position which controls the inner rotating compass bezel. It has a screw-down, solid case back with engravings of the Alpinist mountain and has a water resistance of 200m which makes it airtight for all occasions.
The Dial
The dial is a mesmerizing sunburst green and it gives off different shades depending on the lighting. The applied numerals/markers and the Seiko emblem are polished gold which gives a unique combination with the green dial. It also has very classy lumed cathedral type hands which are uncommon in field watches.
The Movement
The Seiko Alpinist Green SARB017 houses the reliable Seiko caliber 6R15 automatic movement which has a hacking function and also can be hand-wound. It ticks at 21,600 vph (3hz) and has a power reserve of 50 hrs. It also has a date complication.
This is one of those watches which strikes a fine balance between quality and affordability and has garnered a huge cult like fan following. With all the popularity along with the history behind it, the green Seiko Alpinist has made a niche for itself and stands tall amongst other iconic watches.
